I have been to Crane beach in Ipswich many times. Despite the excessive parking charge and the crowding in summer, it is one of my favorite beaches on the north shore. If you walk half mile or so to the right on the beach, past the cooler toting families, you can find some space on the beautiful white sand.
However I had never been to the nearby Crane Castle. This is worth a visit, the house and gardens are beautiful. There is a nice view of Plum Island if you are willing to the walk to the end of the 'Grand Allee'.
